Should I buy a Kuro before it's too late? PDF Print E-mail

As we'll remind everyone for what's sure to not be the last time, Pioneer will stop making plasmas. That's significant for shoppers looking to buy a high-end TV for one big reason: Pioneer makes what are still, in my and many other experts' opinions, the best HDTVs on the market. The company's Elite Kuro series earned the only "10" I've ever awarded in Performance for a flat-panel TV, while the superb non-Elite PDP-5020FD series were nearly as good, minus some adjustments and color accuracy (and plus about two grand).

Pioneer's factory in Pomona, Calif., will continue to manufacture these Kuro displays through April before it closes, according to the company, but after that I expect them to disappear quickly from store shelves. Of course, as long as the company itself is still around, I expect it to stand behind any Kuros it sells.

A high-tech bait car has been donated to the San Diego Police Department to help catch more car thieves in the act.

“We warn everybody: If you steal a car, it may belong to the San Diego Police Department,” Police Chief William Lansdowne said during a news conference Thursday in front of police headquarters.

Technology-Based Features Drive Automotive Sales PDF Print E-mail

The current automotive sales slump is impacting nearly all automakers around the world. While outstanding pricing and financing options provide a strong incentive, according to David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the technology-based features from safety, comfort and convenience, infotainment and, of course, performance, frequently help the consumer decide to purchase one vehicle over another. Thanks to input from several automotive suppliers, Design News has created a technology stimulus package of goodies that could bring car buyers back to showroom floors. Some of these are still in the concept stage.

Enterpreneur brings 'Hi-Tech' mind to Estacada PDF Print E-mail
When the young Jordan Winthrop was 10 years old, he dismantled a walkman (an ancestor of the iPod) and turned the headphones, wiring and circuitry into a telephone. He started building online bulletin board sites (the ancestor of the Internet) by the time he was in junior high and was paid in free limo rides and other perks for being so tech savvy. He read a collection of books on electrical wiring when he was 14, and wired his parents house, under construction on Whidbey Island, without supervision and received a thumb’s up for the work by an inspector.
